    by candlewick96 » Thu Jul 12, 2007 8:26 pm

Seems like this is the second time the set up guys at Chapparal Motors have tod me this. The first time, for my 400 SuMo that the Owner's manua said woud be totally happy with 87 octane, which it is. Any advice?

The 9:1 compression ratio should be fine with 87 octane. Try it, listen for knock and adjust upward as necessary. We run 92 in our CRF 80 (same basic engine) but only because we use the same gas can for our X's.

Now why do you think they recommend this (seems like) to every Tom, Dick, and Harry who they hand over keys to? My take is "use the lowest octane unless you notice pinging."

I don't know, but I agree with your take.

The lower octane fuels have a faster flame spread, so they'll result in more complete combustion and maximize power. Maybe that's their theory???

87 octane all day with no troubles. You are wasting money putting 93 octane in a stock XR100.

Please work on the type in your posts. You come off sounding very uneducated. Not to mention, it is very unprofessional. There are other sites that don't mind it though, feel free to go there.

I feel the same way every time I read his posts. Often times, I have to read them more than once just to understand what he's trying to say. I PMed him about it and he told me to "Get used to it"

What makes you think higher octane fuel is better and cleaner???

The misconception about things more expensive being better? Litle(sic)boy, try diesel. Its octane rating is even better than premium gas.

BTW (sic) is not the same as "sick." Much as it sounds funny, I don't do stuff like that. (sic) is a literary tool to designate the writer's acknowedgement that he is re-posting word/s that he knows may contain error/s.

    We are all really old.

Most of us went to school back when the official language was English.

If you are not running a high compression piston, you might be surprised at the power you get from the 87 octane gasoline.

The lower octane fuels have a faster flame spread rating and therefore will burn faster and more completely. You will achieve more power as more of the fuel is burnt.

Higher octane fuels have a higher ratio of Xylene added to make them burn slower and ignite at a higher temperature so that the compression doesn't cause preignition (pinging). Xylene has a lower BTU rating than does Gasoline.

Bottom line = lower octane in a low compression engine equals more power.

    Aight?
