    Changing oil filter.

    by crf150rider » Wed Jan 05, 2005 11:39 am

The oil filter is behind the clutch cover and I need to change it, what all do I need to know on changing the oil filter. I know I have to drain oil, but anything else?

A CRF150 has an oil filter other then that cup shaped screen on the left side of the engine?

the only one i ever knew of on my 150 was in the oil drain plug. it was a thimble like screen that popped out with the spring.

That's the only one I'm aware of. I drain the oil from that cap, spray the wire screen with carb cleaner, blow it off, replace and refill with new oil.

So I don't need to take the clutch over off?

Nope. There is a cap on the side of the engine, down low, with a 23mm hex head on it. Place your oil drain pan under it and remove. The oil will drain out from there.

While the oil is draining, clean off the stainless steel screen shaped like a cup that comes out after removing that cap. There's also a spring in there that holds the screen cup in place. Make sure you put it all back together the same way it came out.

To keep your CRF150 running good for years to come, change the oil every 100 miles, or three tanks full of gas. I change the oil in mine after every race, which is only about ten miles or so.

Something you may find interesting. My 1973 and 1975 Honda XL350's have the exact same oil filter screen / spring / cap as my 2003 CRF150. Thirty years, and the same system, so it must work good.
