    CRF150 stumbling on full throttle

    by davis911s » Mon Jul 01, 2019 4:58 pm

My sons 2012 CRF150F was stolen about 2 months ago, luckily the police recovered it after about a month, plastic and everything in good shape. Oddly the only thing damaged was the ignition (odd because when they stole it, the key was in it and they took it with the key)

Anyway, when it was recovered the ignition was damaged and the ignition had been hot wired. It started and ran. I installed a small electric toggle switch to bypass the ignition.

Since it has been recovered, we have only driven it twice. It stumbles or bogs out on full throttle, it will kick back in when you up shift but will bog again in every gear. It is also hard to get it to idle.

    Any ideas?

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

Glad you recovered the bike , you got lucky ........ =DD .... With that said , I am guessing , that the bike sat for a couple months with gas in the carb , I am also guessing that it is not Non Ethanol gas , which most likely means the carb is now gummed up from the bad gas ..... What you need to do is remove the carb and do a thorough cleaning , and if possible blow thru all the jets with air , if you can not get it to run better after that , then I would go to the local bike shop/Honda Dealer and get/order new jets (mainly the Pilot and Starter Jet's as they are the smallest and subject to clogging easily)

I would also try replacing the switch (hopefully the plug in harness is still intact) , to make sure everything is hooked up correctly and properly grounded where needed , to eliminate any issues with the switch "possibly" causing some the intermittent sputtering , though it sounds from your description that the carb is the culprit

But what I am guessing you will find when removing the carb bowl , will be some green stuff coating everything , all that will need to be removed with Carb Spray and maybe some scrubbing , (make sure to remove any rubber parts when spraying as it will ruin any rubber O-Rings or seals) ..... If you can't get it clean , then you need to see if the bike shop has a Ultrasonic Cleaner to remove any blockage that might be too hard to remove with just Carb Cleaner ....

Lastly , make sure you drain ALL the gas , and put in FRESH , preferably Non Ethanol gas , you can use the remaining gas you removed , and just add it to your car/truck as it will burn it without issues even if its slightly bad/old , as the "shelf life" of most gas now is about 1-2 months , before you start having issues with bikes using it .... You can thank the E.P.A. for that , because that water that drips from your car's tailpipe , is the remnants of Ethanol ....basically its water , and it does not burn and what turns the carb internals green , as it is literally algae growing in the bowl from all the moisture........ ;)

Those that steal aren't very bright sometimes.
I would also pull the petcock on the tank and give it a good flush. You don't know what the scum have put in the tank. Flush hose to carby as well.

Since it runs poor at full throttle as well as idle a good clean and fresh fuel will do wonders.
Careful pulling the float bowl and take a photo before pulling it apart to clean so you know which way the little bits go.
