Thinking about getting a bigger bike.

    by '04crf150f » Wed Jun 22, 2005 2:25 pm

Y'all, I think I wan't a bigger bike, like the CRF250R or X. I'm 5'7", at 180 lbs. I've been riding for two years but only hit the track once. Do y'all think I should wait, upgrade my suspension with a Pro Action rebuild and get more time in on the track or just go for the new bike.

Unless you mostly race, I'd stay away from the 250R. The 250X is much more versatile. Biggest problem you will have with either bike is seat height. At 5'7" you'll have a hard time getting any part of your foot on the ground. This may not be a problem depending on what type of terrain you ride. If it is, you will probably want to lower the bike about one inch. I always use a lowering link for anything 1" or less. If you need more, then it starts getting expensive to do it right.

You're on the right track though. Skip the 230F. If you have mastered the 150F and are looking to grow your skills, the 250R/X are a great way to go!

    Good Luck.....

KCRFS, you have a 250X and a 230. i have a 230 and im wondering how the 230 is compared to the 250x.
is there really a big difference between the power of the two bikes?are they similar in any way? thx :?:

This is one of those "yes" and "no" answers. The 230F will eventually rev up enough that it provides all the HP and torque that we need. It just doesn't do it very fast.

Now, for me, a stock 250X revs up too fast. I've said it before (and it always gets me in trouble on this WEB site), but I feel a stock 250X is just a slightly de-tuned 250R. Its gearing is too tall and it just doesn't have enough fly wheel mass for serious trail riding. After correcting both of these issues, I really like the bike (cheesy plastic fittings aside).

The nice thing is that my wife and I swap bikes all the time until things get knarly, then she prefers the 230F because she thinks the 250X is still to untamed for her, and I have to admit, you always have to keep an eye on it. It can jump out from underneath really fast (especially if you weigh 135lbs like I do).

I like thumpers to be thumpers. The 230F qualifies 100%. The 250X still feels like a 2-stroke wanna be to me, but then I don't miss my old KX motocross bikes at all. It's still a far better bike than a light switch (if you know what I mean).

For me, the real benefit of a 250X over a 230F is the suspension. I don't care what you do to the 230F, the 250X will beat it every time as far as the suspension is concerned.

    Hope this helps..........

thx for the reply. interesting review! i agree with you about the 230 being a good trail bike 8) maybe you should get another 230 and sell the 250X hehehe.
do you plan to get a 450X?
    thx kcrfs 8)

when i upgrade bikes ill skip the 250X and get a 450x. i heard the 450x has very controllable power and that its an awesome trail bike. what do you think?

MY dad has a 450x and i would say it has a lot of power on the landing of a jump you have to be careful on the throttle not to flip over backward due to rebound+rev he has had it about a week and loves it and its fast  its gearing is diff from the r 1 and 2 are lower 3 is the same 4 and 5 are taller I havent riden it yet but I have sat on it I hope you are tall becuase it has a tall seat height hes 6'8" so thats not a problem. My favorite part is the air box this is genious by a quarter turn of a thumb screw the air box is open. this is great compared t the 150 that require you to take off the number plate and eight screws hich this doesnt sound like a big deeal but if want to change the filter at the track time is important.thats all I can say so far

btw :whats up with the pic :?:

No, I have no plans to buy a 450X. With my skinny little butt, I'd never be able to handle all the power. I've ridden a couple of 450Rs and they are pretty much insane.

I'm very happy with my 250X.
