    Suspension Mysteries, Revealed!

    by satisfied » Mon May 07, 2007 11:54 pm

Can the CRF230f and 150f Springs be interchanged?

Is the BBR aftermarket application for both bikes the same?

What is better in terms of performance, CR85 Forks, and rear suspension. Or The BBR fork springs and Rear Spring?

Am I able to install the fork springs and rear spring myself?

Could I install the CR85 forks and Rear suspension myself?

Please someone answer. This forum is so dead, we have to get in here more often. I say, boycott dirtrider!!!

What is better in terms of performance, CR85 Forks, and rear suspension. Or The BBR fork springs and Rear Spring?the CR80/85 suspension is way better for any kind of riding on the 150F , but you still have to respring them for a heavier bike and or rider weight , the 230f likes forks off of a older cr250 or an rm 250 , they give you more wheel travel for that 21 inch front wheel , the cr85 stuff works great on the 150f because of the 19 inch front wheel

Am I able to install the fork springs and rear spring myself?if you mean using the bbr springs on your stock 150f parts , then yes it is pretty simple , unless you are a complete boob with a wrench in your hand

Could I install the CR85 forks and Rear suspension myself? as long as you have access to some machine tools or you spend your money with Reger Engineering and get all the bits you will need to covert the forks over to the 150f and don't forget his adapter for the front wheel of the 150 , the 150 f has much better brakes than the cr85 , and again it helps to be fairly mechanically adept

I will post some pics later today in my garage of mama's 150F with the cr85 conversion , it really transforms the bike , no more bottoming out the front end on the littlest of bumps , the back end actually absorbs bumps instead of bottoming and it isn't stiff like a pogo stick (which is what you will have if you use the bbr springs from what I have been told )

It aint cheap to do the conversion though
Reger Engineering will hook you up with everything for around $1600 (but you still need to drop 200 bucks on springs from Cannon Racecraft)

If you are talented and can do the modifications to the shock and triple tree yourself you can save some serious cash by getting a good used set of forks off ebay .
I did the entire conversion for about $650

Here's the list of what you need to do the cr85 suspension on a CRF150F :

    1. Set of used USD showas off a cr80/85 from ebay
2 You need a CR80/85 triple tree set
    3. longer front brake line ( a Crf250/450 line works good)
    4. Front # plate from a cr80/85
    5. set of .44 springs from Cannon Racecraft for the forks
    6. wheel spacers for front wheel , reger or make your own
    7. caliper adapter for front brake , again Reger or make your own
    8 . Front axle from a cr 80/85

    onto the rear end

9 you need a complete rear showa shock from a cr85 , lot's of em on ebay
    10. pay reger to modify it or have a milling machine handy You also have to modify the frame on your 150f for the top shock mount , you need clearance for the resivoir.
    11. get a 6.2 spring from cannon racecraft
    12. if you want to have the front and rear suspension set up speciffically for mx tracks take the whole mess to a shop that has dealt with the conversions and get the forks and shock revalved for what you want to accomplish

If you just trail ride the CR 80/85 forks and shock work fine like they come from honda you just need the stiffer springs

Right about now you are probably thinking Damn , should have spent the $4000 bucks on a 150R

Haha, yeah, if you want better suspension on a 150, get a 150R. I know a guy who spent appx. $5000 on a new suspension and aluminum frame so he could race MX with his 150F. Now me, I'm not that heavy so I don't have much of a problem with the suspension....except for the damn front forks!
If it is possible, it is done. If it is impossible, it will be done.

until you put a decent front end on the bike then the problems with the 150f shock become very apparent !

bbr fork springs for the 150f and the 230f are different. the shock spring is the same.

cr85 is a much better suspension than what is found on the crf150f or crf230f. in fact, the cr85 suspension is shared by the new crf150r.

you can install the 150f fork and shock springs yourself if you are a reasonable wrench and have the shop manual to guide you.

installing the cr85 requires quite a bit of work and is expensive to collect all the parts. if you are serious about this you'll need to do yoru research and determine if you are up to it from an effort and expense standpoint.

Someone told me that Joker machine springs and BBR springs are the same. Is that true?

I just finished installing the forks, I haven't even changed the oil on my bike, or washed it before. It took 7 hours of work, One thing I learned is that things never fit like websites say they do, they require a lot of work, washers, time, patience, and strength. I'm beat, I still don't have the rear on, and I need a bracket for my ignition, unless someone can tell me how to bypass/remove it, a new clutch cable, and a new/longer brake line. Some nuts are not fitting as safely as they should (filling their holes only halfway through) I hope It's safe to ride on, because tommorow I plan on riding. What do you guys think?
