CRF230F plug reading - Jetting help

    by RomP » Sun Apr 21, 2019 9:32 am

Hi all, hoping to get some advice from the Experts.

    We run 2 x CRF230F bikes ( 2005 and 2008 ), identically setup carbs.

One of the bikes seem to be running a bit lean, see picture attached for your comments.

The only difference between Bike A and B is that Bike B has a fresh new top-end rebuilt. Standard OEM piston, rings. Valve-stem seals, valves lapped

Both were run for quick 20 minute out-ride with new plugs, mostly low to mid range rpm and about 3-5 runs WOT for 20 seconds or so.

In case picture is unclear, here are the details:
Plug Left = Bike A Plug Right = Bike B
    Both carbs are identically setup.
    45 Pilot
    125 Main
Needle clip 4th from top ( running 03-05 needles )
    Airbox restrictor = OFF
    Standard Header
    Performance ( silencer only )
    Altitude 4,500 ft
    Temp 20-35Deg C ( 70-90f )
Comment: We have run 128 Mains before with no issues, maybe reconsider going back to 128 main jets ?

Your opinions / recommendations will be appreciated.

Personally I think you are over thinking this. Plug A does appear to have a slight bit of build up and is slightly darker and maybe a touch of oil? But it still is not bad by any means.
That could be due to it not being the engine with the fresh rebuild and you are getting a slight bit of oil burning. It can also just be that there is always a slight difference in any two engines. No two engines are identical due to manufacturing tolerances on all of the components. It can even be fuel degradation from one bike to the other, two different riders styles, air filter cleaning and oiling differences ect...

If they run good you have nothing to worry about. Those plugs both look fine. Put a new plug in bike A and go riding. :D

Have to agree with Neil there is not much difference and the centre electrode looks good on both. You could try stepping up the main it depends if you were WOT before you stopped.
