Starter motor works but Engine will not turn

    by mrgoins » Mon Jan 21, 2019 9:56 am

04 Honda CRF230F engine will not turn. When I go to try and start my bike the starting motor cranks and turns just fine, but it will not engage the engine to start. I have replaced the spark plug and the starter solenoid, but still can't get a power stroke. I have checked/cleaned carburetor. The mechanisms inside the carburetor are also working as the should when I work the throttle and the choke lever. Anybody have any ideas of what might be going wrong, or if there is something I missed while trying to get the bike to start?

You did many repairs that have nothing to do with the started not engaging. From what you described it sounds like it is time to pull the starter and check why the starter gear is not engaging. You can use a battery to do a direct pulse to see what is going on with the starter off of the engine. Possible a burr or sticking gear ? Pull it and take a look.

    1. Low voltage from the battery
    2.bad connection or earth or
    3. pinion shaft needs a clean and a lube.

That would be some items I would look at.

The first 2 are purely electrical and is easiest to check.

You will have to pull the starter to make sure things are working mechanically.

Ray brought up a good point. If the battery voltage / amps are to low the starter cog will not have enough power / force to engage.

Simple things first. Then pull the starter if the battery checks good.

Yeah Neil, It is always best to check he simple things first.

Been to more then one bike being torn down only to have to break the news that you needed to be on reserve to get it to start. A simple bike shake may produce a sloshing, but doesn’t mean “you got fuel “.

The good earth from the battery is just as important as good wiring to the starter.
