    crf230f drive chain problem

    by jroberts » Mon Jan 09, 2017 6:10 am

My grandson has a 2017 CRF230F and he rode it through a big bog and buried the back end up to the top of the rear sprocket. We had to dig it out and now the chain is extremely tight and the rear wheel will not turn when you push the bike. Any ideas what happened and how to fix it?

sounds like the rear wheel shifted back in the awingarm. A good starting point to eliminate potential causes is to clean the entire bike. Loosen the snail adjusters at the axle and slide the wheel forward to take the tension off of the chain a bit. Check to see if the wheel spins freely with the transmission in neutral. Crank the engine to see if it spins freely. If all are free wheeling (so to speak) adjust the wheel and chain tension per your owners manual recomendations and lube the chain. Tighten rear axle properly.

thanks. So the axle nut would have to be loosened and then the chain adjusted and then tighten the axle nut? Doesn't it need to be torqued?

Correct on the process. Yes it should be; per the manual AND if you have a torque wrench. I, personnally, have never owned a torque wrench. I just (and this may get me a ration from anal mechanic types) cinch it down nice and tight. In the 35 years I have owned and wrenched my own bikes I have never had an issue. I'd venture to say the mechanic at your local dealer/shop does the same thing.
