greeting from the uk and a missfire

    by plugspanner » Sat Aug 06, 2016 8:30 am

    i hope someone can help.
i have a 2005 crf230f bought new with lights and road legal here in the uk.
i use if for trail riding, off road trials and long distance trials (a mix of both)
all was well until recently when it started to missfire just when you need the power to climb a hill ect.
i also noticed a knocking from the rhs casing.
i took it apart found the flywheel bearing was knocking so replaced that.
the bike now starts from cold and the knocking has gone but the missfire is still there.
i have bought a new coil and it did not cure it, i have also just bought another non road legal crf 230, 2007 model and swapped the cdi box but it still misses, the only thing left seems to be the stator end pulse unit, does anyone think that might be faulty, i supose i could swap the one from the other bike to try it, thanks for your input.

Hi plugspanner and welcome to the site.
Not sure what you mean by flywheel bearing.
You mention the RHS case where the clutch is, do you mean the clutch lifter bearing?

The flywheel is under the left side case and goes over the stator. A bit disjointed compared to a clutch/flywheel setup in a car for sure. Have you done the simple thing of change the spark plug?

If by stator end pulse unit you mean the ignition pick up, I have always found these either work or don't. If the wiring for it is worn through as it goes up through the frame that can cause a miss as ignition signal is being lost to ground.

    thanks for the reply,
sorry i meant the lhs crank bearing, i wondered as the movement was going on with the flywheel as the bearing was worn would that have affected the pulse generator?
brand new plug, infact i tried several, fiorst thing i changed.

Check the pulse generator for flywheel damage and make sure the wiring wasn't damaged when changing the bearing.
