    Bad Petcock?

    by dadonred » Sun Nov 04, 2012 2:16 pm

    Hi ya,
So, had problems getting 2003 230f to start. New battery, new plug (old one looked fouled), changed oil just because I care, and no joy.

Was looking to start to mess with carb and took fuel line loose to drain. No fuel when petcock was on fuel, but plenty fuel running when on reserve.

So question: new petcock? Or is there something to clean? Or a fuel line from tank to petcock?

I looked at exploded diagram and think I only see one supply in, so I don't really understand how reserve works. (Looking at part # 1 on fuel tank exploder drawing.).

Anyone have any wisdom on petcock or suggestion? Thanks!

Forgot to mention it started fine after turning petcock to reserve...
Also, possible that there was not enough fuel in the tank so that when turning to RES, it just got whatever fuel was left. That said, how does the petcock work - only one tube running from petcock to fuel tank?

welcome to CRF's Only. i would definitely try and clean it. typically when they go bad they leak fuel so i'm guessing it's clogged.

    again, welcome!

The obvious first point is to put a gallon of fuel in and try the tap again, only then will you know if its faulty , :?

The tube that sits inside the tank allows fuel to go through until it gets down to the reserve level.

When you rotate the tap to reserve a lower hole is opened to allow the tap to pass fuel.

Thanks! Fuel (or lack thereof) was the culprit. Sigh.

I had the same issue - I had my wife's 230 completely torn apart and after re-assembly I added about 1/2 gallon of gas and tried to start it... it would crank but refused to start. I cleaned the carb then noticed that gas came out on Reserve but not on On. I took the petcock out and it was spotless clean so I put it back together and added at least a gallon of gas, turned it to On, and it started right up. Boy did I feel dumb! LOL!
Glad you got it figured out.
