If i understand your question you're asking about the cam tensioner. With the tensioner out of the head turn the shaft clockwise with a screwdriver until it locks, retracting the lifter shaft. Then reinstall it torquing it to 9 ft. lbs. Then just turn the shaft counterclock wise to release it. Lube up your o-ring and put it in the tensioner lifter groove and then install the sealing plug torquing it to 3 ft. lbs.
Hope this helps you out. Good luck.

yes the cross head screw arrangement on rear of cylinder ,that doesnt sound automatic to me ??when you remove the tensioner wont the chain become very slack and risk coming off/moving on the sprockets??

No, (assuming you don't have things half assembled) the chain goes around the cam sprocket which is held on by 2 bolts. There is no risk of it coming off. The instructions above are directly from the Honda service manual so if you follow them you'll be fine.

If you haven't done a tear down on your engine, or installed a new cam etc. you don't need to do anything with it. It is "automatic" in that it's spring loaded so it keeps a steady tension on the cam chain, requiring no adjustment. Again, if you haven't had your engine apart then this reinstallation procedure isn't necessary.
