thinking i may need some new rings. its heard to start, less power than it used to, and smokes more than i think it should. if i were to check compression what is the normal range and what would be considered low enough that it should be rebuilt?

if i do need to replace the rings how hard is it? so far the only work i've ever done on a 4 stroke was rejetting the carb on this bike. other than that i've only worked on single cyl 2 strokes.

If you have ever replaced a top end on a 2 stroke then it won't be much harder on a 230F.
Get the proper workshop manual and have a read then post any questions.

Surprised it needs it though - was the aircleaner neglected?

it is a 2006 that i got early 2010 and looked like the filter had never been cleaned or changed. i put a twin air in it and put the power up kit in. previous owner removed the baffle but didnt rejet at all.

That combination of tardiness will result in ring wear.
Lets hope it was overheated because of a lean condition.

What pilot jet are you using.

not sure what size it is. it was the one that came with the power up jet kit sold on the crfs only store.
