Moving up

i was thinking about moving up from a 230 to something a bit bigger would the crf450x be to big ?

How big are you and what's your level of experience? Have you sat on one yet?

no i haven't sat on one yet. I am about 5'10 and i had a dirt bike ever since i was about 5

I would go with the 450. I Had a 230 too then I got a 450R and its awsome so much more power.

Go to a 450R. You won't regret it.

Bo's right, the 450x is better for beginners. It has more creature comforts that will make it easy to adjust to.

1) He's not a beginner and it is DEFINATELY not a bike for beginners. Its designed for a different kind of RACING. There are races besides supercross
2) What creature comforts? The E-Start I'll give you although valueable for agrerssive trails. What are the others??

Trimm, if you're strong enough to heft a 450 up off the ground, feel certain that you have maxed out on the 230, and won't be intimidated by a huge increase in horsepower, then maybe the 450X is the one for you. Do you plan to do mostly trail/woods riding? Any chance you could bum a ride on a 250 and/or a 450 to make your decision a little less difficult?

The softer suspension, the wider ratio gearing, and I have to run, I'll be back later so you guys can laugh some more.

He is tall enough where he might not even consider a lowering link. And he has said he is experienced, so the 230 would most likely bore him...
Okay, enough of the "third-party" speak, lol!!!
Last year I purchased a 230, and I had never ever rode a dirt bike in my life before that. I am barely over 6 feet tall and weigh about 235 pounds. I did all the mods as well as the springs front and back. I soon found that I wanted a little bit more than what this bike could offer so I did move up to the 450X early this year and am loving this bike very much.
Having said this, the 230 is an excellent trail bike and will provide tons of fun, just don't expect to keep up with the big boys of the fire roads and 2 tracks. The 230 also is much more forgiving mechanically than any 250 or 450.
The real question you need to ask yourself is, can I afford everything associated with purchasing a dirt bike. While the bigger bigs do provide more fun, they are definately harder on your wallet. So in my opinion, total cost of ownership should be your real question that needs to be answered...
