    Handguards aka barkbusters

    by Socrates » Wed Jan 10, 2007 8:57 am

Can anyone recommend a good set of custom fit handguards for the 230? I would prefer some type that I didn't have to cut of the ends of my grips and will not fall apart first tree I hit.

    Thanks

I'm getting ready to install a set of Acerbis Rally Pro handguards on my 230. These are durable enough not to fall apart on the trees, but I doubt you'll find anything durable for eastern woods riding that doesn't require bar end mounting. When are we riding again?

There are bark busters that bolt to the handlebar and perch. They don't mount into the bar ends but then again don't have quite the protection of the Acerbis's. I took my time and carefully cut the grips and installed the washers for the throttle side and am quite happy. Use a stage bit for the throttle mechanism and you will have a nice frictionless throttle response (no binding)

A stage bit is a special drill bit that increases in size as it gets further up. (some people call it a reamer) You can get them in metric or standard in varying sizes (for eg. 3mm - 10mm)
You keep drilling the throttle end until you reach the required size (eg. 8mm) This way the washer fits into the end like a bushing, the guard is then held away from the throttle allowing free movement.
PM me and I'll send you some pics...

Check these out in the CRFS store....

    http://www.crfsonly.com/catalog/product ... 5b236557c0

The Cycras are made in the USA and come in several colors......and you should support the site by purchasing product there when you can.

Cycra also markets a Stealth version that does not require bar end mounting. See them here also,

    http://www.crfsonly.com/catalog/product ... 103efbf05b

Do a search on this site and you will find several applications and photos.

Edit: Just did a quick search for "Cycra" and found no less than sixteen resources/threads with photos and info on Cycra handguards here on CRF's....this thread has comments on Acerbis, Fastway, and Cycra

    Good Luck! :)

    Thanks

I recently got a set of Cycra ProBends from right here at CRFsOnly. Took them out for the first time this past weekend. I'm not going knock or comment on any other brands as I have no experience with them, but the ProBend product is top notch. I suppose they would break if you hit a tree going 50mph, but let me tell you...I KNOW HOW TO HIT TREES! It seems like my bike is just plain attracted to them. I swear my 450 must have been a freakin' pine tree in its last life and is just itchin to get back to its "roots." It couldn't possibly be MY riding skills!

Anyway, these guards did great this last weekend. We rode in muddy conditions and I was down more than Jerry Cooney. Protected the levers, protected the hands/fingers. I just ran right through saplings and forest trash like it wasn't even there. I can say that IF you decide on Cycra, you'll be getting a quality product. I did cut the grip ends for this product, but I don't mind. Just a little fyi
