Remember, Honda does not produce oil. Their engineers produce a specification for oil. Oil producers bid to get the Honda supply contract. The Oil Producer that meets the Honda spec at the lowest price, gets the contract.

I wouldn't use a car oil personally. The CRF230 wouldn't have too much issue as long as it wasn't "energy conserving" oil, which most car oils are.

The additives such as molybdenum which serve to lower friction will do just that...on your clutch.

I think the cheapest oil I would use would be the Honda GN4.

Personally, I use the Maxima Maxum Extra full ester synthetic.

    msudawg,

    Told you so!!

They are all trying to help though and they are all telling you the same.

    Best oil meant for bikes.

As Oldtimer said replace it more regularly if you don't wish to use the latest synthetic.

Mind you it doesn't matter whether it is Honda oil or the Maxima - they all should be changed after a set time anyway.
Way up the price sometimes it is not that much diference for a little extra protection.
The Motul 5100 I use is middle of the road oil and is changed every 20hrs. It has always come out clean as do the filter screen and spinner.

Oh and when Oldtimer changes oil in the 2 stroke it is only for the transmission.(Dave , my sons CR80 comes out greyish every time after only 4hrs)

In the 230 it does the engine as well.

    Baffle out, Screens In

It starts,it runs,it gets to where all CRFs can get to without the valve or valve plate dramas
