Engine
Protector Meet Ignition Protector!
Leave
it to Works Connection to look for additional ways
to protect expensive parts on your Honda CRF. The
ignition cover isn't cheap to replace should it be
damage. Worse, if you damage it during a race you've
not only lost the cost of the cover, but als o
the cost of your race day. Is this kind of protection
necessary? I guess that depends on what kind of track
or trail you are riding. If there are deep ruts, especially
in tight left-hand turns you'll definetly run the
risk of "dragging" the lower edge of the
ignition cover through the dirt.
I
had previously outfitted our 2005 Honda CRF450R with
the Works Connection Engine Guards. These provide
great protection for the cases and are almost mandatory
replacements of the cheap plasitc guards that come
stock. They do however deliver absolutely no protection
for the ignition cover. Based on feedback from customers,
Works Connection has addressed this need.

 Typical
of all Works Connection products this is funtional
art. Made from aircraft quality aluminum and TIG welded
to exacting standards of quality. The guard requires
you to remove the lower engine mount bolt for installation.
Works Connection supplies a new, longer, replacement
engine mount bolt. The stock washer and nut are reused.
The top mounting point uses the bolt from the stock
engine guard. Make sure you use Loc-tite on these
to prevent them from coming lose during operation.
The
fit was as good as the finish. They went on without
challenge. I was impressed with how easy it was to
remove and replace the engine mount bolt. This is
a credit to Honda's engineering and manufacturing.
It literally slid in and out without any exertion.
Installation took no more than 15 minutes at the track.

Will
it work? Absolutely. It will provide that extra protection
should you be carving a lefty in a deeply rutted turn
or just hard charging a straight that's deeply rutted.
For added protection, this guard is a must.
You
only track ride and so there's no reason for a skid
plate right? Yeah right. Have you ever looked at the
rails and case of a year old track-only bike? It's
not a pretty sight. Let's face it, every track has
its share of rocks that will find you and jumps that
you will eventually case. Not to mention the occasional
task of running over a bike or two in the first turn
of a race. Oh, sure like that never happens.

The Pits |
- Must
buy the right side engine guard separately
for protecting both sides
- You'll
have to field regular questions like, "I've
never seen that engine guard, who makes that?"
