SUB Mount - Stabilizer Under Bar
If
you haven’t heard of BRP Racing Products
this will be an excellent introduction to the quality
products they produce. The BRP SUB (Stabilizer Under
Bar) mount is a product that allows Scotts steering
stabilizers to be mounted under the bar instead of
the more traditional approach of mounting them on
top of the bar. What difference does it make where
the stabilizer is mounted you might ask?

Well,
there are several reasons why BRP’s SUB mount
is a better solution. First, mounting the stabilizer
under the bar increases rider safety. With the stabilizer
under the bar the rider isn’t exposed to impacting
the nearly 2” thick stabilizer in a crash. Trust
me, having a stabilizer implanted in your sternum
with or without a chest protector is not something
you hope doesn’t happen, but something you do
whatever you can to avoid happening. Second, mounted
under the bars means you have a shorter post which
increases rigidity and improves stabilizer results.
Third, if you’re a tall rider the SUB mount
lifts the bars while utilizing the space under the
bars. At 6’3” I run with +15mm bar risers.
When you add 2” of stabilizer on top of the
higher bars it really extends the “height”
of the total package. If you’re not a tall pilot,
you’ll do well with bars with a lower rise to
compensate for the SUB Mount’s height. Lastly,
the SUB Mount puts the Scotts stabilizer control dial
closer to the rider for easy on-the-fly adjustments.
Installation
of the SUB mount is quick and easy. This is especially
true if you have already swapped out your stock 7/8”
Renthals with a 1 1/8” fat bar. Fat bars are
required as the SUB is only available in the 1 1/8"
bar mount size. If you still have the stockers plan
on swapping bars at the same time you install the
BRP SUB mount. Also, if you already have a Scotts
stabilizer you will likely need a shorter post. If
you do need a shorter post you’ll need to install
that prior to installing the BRB SUB mount.

The Podium |
- Excellent
design, quality, and workmanship
- Installation
is quick and simple
- Increases
stock bar height for tall riders this is a
ergonomic plus
- Increases
safety over top mounted stabilizer mounts
- Reverse
mounted stabilizer moves adjusters closer
to the rider
- Lower
stabilizer mount location means shorter tower
delivering increased rigidity

Once
you are set with the correct bar and Scotts tower,
installation is as simple as removing the stock bar
clamps and installing the BRP SUB mount clamp. Do
not reuse the lower stock rubber cones. BRP sends
with the SUB mount new lower rubber cones that are
narrower than the stock versions. These cones allow
full left-to-right steering travel of the front wheel
without making contact with the Scotts post. Make
sure you refer to your manual for correct torque specifications.
Once
the SUB mount is installed, mounting the Scotts stabilizer
is very simple. It takes two bolts to mount the Scotts
to the SUB mount. The stabilizer mounts in the reverse
position in the SUB mount. This moves the adjuster
dial to a position closer to you making on-the-fly
adjustments even easier. The only downside to this
set up is the stabilizer mounting bolts end up under
the handlebar, which makes swapping the stabilizer
from bike to bike slightly more time consuming. This
is a very small price to pay for the benefits offered
by the SUB mount.
As
you can see we reviewed a black version of the SUB
mount. BRP is moving away from offering red and silver
anodized versions to standardize on their signature
color black. This color against the gold of the Scotts
stabilizer creates an eye popping setup. This is guaranteed
to attract attention at the track or on the trail.
Conclusion
The
BRP SUB Mount is an excellent solution for mounting
a Scotts Stabilizer. This location provides improved
rider safety, offers a shorter post for increased
stabilizer control, provides a great solution for
tall riders that require higher bar mounts, and mounting
in the reverse position means on-the-fly adjustments
are even easier. The quality and fit are exceptional.
The provided rubber cones allow for full range of
steering control with the Scotts post installed. If
you’re considering a Scott Stabilizer, or already
have one, this is a mounting system worth serious
consideration.

The Pits |
- Reverse
mounted stabilizer means you have to remove
the top bar clamp and handlebar to move the
stabilizer to another bike. Small price to
pay for the benefits of the SUB mount.
- Since
the SUB mount increases the height of the
bar mount position you may have to adjust
your bar bend to acheive proper overall bar
height.
