    Cleaning the Carb

    by kclugston02 » Tue Sep 13, 2011 11:19 am

Ok so I know I did the ultimate sin in motorcycle maintenance, I let the bike sit with fuel still in the tank.

So now I need to clean out the carb but don't really have an idea about how to go about doing it.

I know someone has probably done a walk through of how to do this but I could not find it when I searched the forum. So what is the best way about going about this?

been there myself. the best and most thorough how-to clean a FCR carb was done by Ty Davis and Dirt Rider Magazine. here's a link:

    http://www.dirtrider.com/tech/141_0707_ ... ewall.html

if the jets are clogged it's very difficult to clean them sufficiently not to be an issue. also, do not use carb cleaner on any part that has a rubber seal. this includes throat/slide as the slide has a floating valve seal that is easily damaged by carb cleaner. if you remove the slide make sure you get the floating valve plate on in the correct orientation.

also, check the accelerator pump diaphragm as it is often deteriorated if it's older and/or been sitting in fuel for an extended period of time.

lastly, many of the screw heads are made of butter...so use the correct sized driver and make sure you have a good bite. don't attempt to unscrew a Philips head screw at an angle.

    good luck!

I don't know for sure, but I don't believe the 230F has a FCR carb. The basic principles will be the same though

didn't even notice this was posted in the 230F section! ;-) no it doesn't have a FCR carb but it is the same basic will apply. however, my comments about the accelerator pump will not.
