I can't find the fuel screw!

    by Eric » Sat Dec 09, 2006 1:12 pm

I think I am losing my mind. I do all the carb work on my KTM RFS with no problems, now I am working on my wifes 2007 230 and I ran into a problem. I opened up the airbox, added a UNI filter and rejetted the carb. When I turned the carb over to adjust the fuel screw I see only a brass insert with no slot to adjust with a screwdriver. Are all 07s like this or do I have a problem? This can't be right can it? I looked everywhere else and even had the bowl off.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

That is good and bad news.
Good - I am not losing my mind. :D
Bad - How do I fix this? Is there anyway to get that brass insert out, thread it and insert a fuel screw?

PS - I don't think at this point a new carb is worth the effort or money
    Thanks

I sure hope this is not true. I was planning on some upgrades pretty soon. I will have to look tonight. Keep us updated on what you find out. I have an 07 also. :-x

I just went through this over the weekend. You have to have a special tool to adjust it, otherwise drill it out.
Mine was drilled out and replaced with the CRF's only fuel screw:

Socrates is correct. The 06 and 07 have a non-adjustable fuel screw. There is a wrench available for it and it costs $140. Drill it out or make a tool to remove it and replace with the CRF's Only screw.

Thanks a million for looking that up for me. I am going to use an easy out to get it out, then i will order the fuel screw.
    Thank you all again.

What are the advantages and When would you need to do adjustments?

Just figures my step-son has an 06 and mine is an 07. I looked last night and it looks to be threaded.

I have read a lot on this site and it helped me with the decision to purchases the bikes. We bought two of them last June.

Eric, you beat me to the question on the fuel screw.

    palmrider230 -

You need to make adjustments to the mixture when you rejet the carb, so that it will not run too lean or too rich, possibly resulting in engine damage.

You don't need to drill it out. I went through this too. Trust me the dealers were the biggest morons on this subject but thats another story. I got my brothers Rainbird sprinkler adjuster, stuck it next to the flat area and wiggled it while turning and it came right out. Took two minutes. I too put in the CRF screw and it's perfect.

What exactly did the Rainbird sprinkler adjuster look like?

Or you can buy Part # 08-0242 from Motion Pro for $2.90 + shipping. Then just use it in a 1/4 socket.

It looks like a flathead screwdriver at the tip, basically. It just seemed to fit right. I tried a screwdriver but it tried to round out the D shape. The sprinkler tool slipped in the space by the flat area and I turned it while putting pressure on the the flat part and it started turning. When it stopped I wiggled it and tried again. Maybe I got lucky or something but it worked like a champ.

I purchased this tool and received it today. It works perfect! Motion Pro shipped it to me in 2 days! Thanks for the recommendation chgr70!
