    Homestyle Tire Changing, Made Easy

by paul turner » Thu Dec 20, 2007 9:45 pm

These techniques, and little tricks can be applied on the trail, with smaller/packable tools. On the trail, two guys can repair a tube and get back in gear in under 30 minutes, with BS'ing :)

    Image
The full gamett of tools needed at home for an easy job. Simplify these for the trail.
    Image
Break one side, and start bead removal at the rim-lock.
    Image
Alternate irons as the middle and left irons come loose,
    Image
    Image
    Image
Turn tire over, and remove the second bead, yes, the tube is still inside.
    Image
    Image
The wheel drops down in the tire.
    Image
Jerk the wheel from the tire/tube, Bamm !
    Image
Inflate and check tube for problems, and rub down with baby powder.
    Image
    Image
Seal spokes/rim with 3-5 wraps of electrical tape, rim must be clean for this.
    Image
Start the first bead of new tire, with rim-lock down.
    Image
    Work around with 2 irons.
    Image
    Insert 1/2 the tube.
    Image
    Cheater tool for locating and pulling stem through stem hole. Left hand fingers also required inside the tire for this procedure.{stem wire puller would make this so much easier}
    Image
Inflate the tube with the stem core out.
    Image
    Lube bead.
    Image
Start bead install at the rim-lock, with 3 irons.
    Image
Work towards, and finish up at the stem.
    Image
    Image
Last bit will push on by hand. Lube, inflate again, then install core, and overinflate this time.

    Image
    Remove safety nut.
    Image
    Install stem donut.
    Image
Set tire pressure to an extra 1.0lbs per/week from next ride. These tires/tubes average a 1.0lb loss per week.
    Image
Clean and lube seals and spacers.
    Image
Time to order new spacers, me thinks. 3 distinct grooves from seals.
    Image
    450x complete.
    Image
    250r complete.

    Hope this helps,
    :)

Wait you missed a step. Somewhere in their you must slip wile pushing the tire iron under the bead and jam you’re knuckles into the sprocket. The tire change is not complete without blood on the shirt.

    Like Shawn said.

If you are like me somewhere along the line you break the POS spoon and shred your whole hand across the spokes.

Hey PT one more step that a friend just showed me is to use a couple of tennis balls on either side of the valvestem hole. Place the balls  on the rim about 10 inches apart and pull the tire bead up over them. This will hold the tire off the rim and give you plenty of room to place the valve stem into the rim and in the hole. Trick comes in handy if you're working alone.
