    Fork oil level

    by sbronco68 » Thu Sep 06, 2007 11:42 pm

Hope you guys can help me.
I changed my fork oil the other day for the first time and have a few questions. I pulled the inner cartridge apart and drained the inner oil. I then filled the back up with new oil and pumped the rebound tube tell the extra oil came out the holes in the side. After that I put the forks back together and put 680cc oil in each leg. So now after reading the Honda book they say to only pump the rebound cartridge 3in but i had pumped it all the way. So did I screw it up? Also how do you check fork oil level?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Your manual does say to push the rod in only a few inches before you put the outer tube back on, then drain the overflow. But, shortly after that it tells you to pump the shock full stroke anyways. So, I don't think you would mess anything up.

    How did the oil look?

The oil was pretty bad, I can't see how it gets dirty like that but I guess it’s just from the bushings.

I guess I should have read further in the book. So my question now is I think I have slightly different oil levels in my forks or maybe to low since I pumped that extra oil into the garbage not back into the fork leg with the fork together. So how do you use one of the oil level gages? It looks like just a piece of tubing with a syringe.

Those just measure what is going in, I think. It is used to make sure you are adding a precise amount. I would think that you should be ok. If you are worried, the only real answer would be to drain them again and refill. That would suck though.

Pushing the piston rod in the cartridge and holding it is the proper way. Then let it return by itself. It should go halfway or more. Hopefully all the way.
680cc in the outer leg is WAY too much. I repeat, WAY too much. Working range with stock springs is usually around 350 - 425cc. You better drain before you ride.

Thanks for all your help guys. I just checked the mark on my measuring cup and i put in 380cc not 680cc sorry about that thanks though for the warning.

Here is the tool I was talking about. How do you use it?

The Twin chamber Showas don't use the level tool. You fill the inner cartridage and bleed it off, then the outer chamber gets a measured volume like the 380cc you used.
The level tool is for old style cartridge forks.
