Where can I get a replacement oil return collar?

    by JerkyChew » Wed May 09, 2007 7:44 pm

I lost the oil return collar, which is a little metal cylinder that goes in between the crankcase and the cylinder. So far I haven't been able to find a replacement, and neither has my Honda dealer. I was browsing the microfiche at poweredge.net and am probably seeing the same thing the dealer is - The fiche doesn't list the oil return collar, just the two dowels that go on the cylinder studs. What I need goes in the big hole in the far left of this pic:

Anybody know where I can get one?

You didn't list a year and your link didn't work for me.

Why would there be an oil return collar between the cylinder and the crankcase if the oil has no where to go, but down the cylinder walls...??

Are you talking about the coolant passage in the front of the cylinder? No collar there either...

Sorry about that. I've been home sick for a couple days so I was a bit out of it when I made that last post. The bike is a 2006 CRF250R.

The hole you circled was one of the stud holes; it's the slightly larger one just above the one circled. There's a better pic of it on page 2-28 of my Haynes manual, I'll fire up the scanner and see if I can get it into an online format.

    I don't think that picture is for a 250R. Maybe an X???
I can't think of why a CRF250R would need an oil return passage.

It must be for coolant and the Haynes manual is indicating it incorrectly. You can see the same thing on my 450R...

The collar is pressed into the cylinder. Your sure it's not on the bottom of the cylinder?

Awesome. I guess this means that i need to pick up another brand of service manual to see what that thing does and how to get a new one. And nope, it's not in the cylinder or the crank.

Thanks for the help. Any more advice would be appreciated.

Here's another pic with the collar you need on the bottom of my cylinder. It also indicates this is a coolant passage...

Thanks for the awesome pics! I'm going to print them out and head to my local Honda dealer (I'm at work, cylinder's at home).

So I went down to the local Honda dealer with my manual, my cylinder, and these pics in hand. After speaking with a couple techs and poring over some microfiche, it appears that that collar does funnel coolant, and not oil. Worse (for Haynes), the 250R doesn't have a collar; it's only on the 450. The Haynes manual makes it sound like it's on either bike.

I'm going to send Haynes an email - Hopefully they'll correct this mistake. Thanks for all the help everyone, it was extremely valuable!

Awesome. I hate the aftermarket manuals. Some have claimed the Clymer is good, but it's always OE for me....
