    Need more Enduro Power!

    by jmajor » Thu Sep 14, 2017 4:20 pm

i picked up a new 2017 250L early this year with the intention to ride mostly trails, enduro style, but told the dealer i would like to drive to the trails, so i ended up with this 250L. Needless to say, as many of you know, this bike is SERIOUSLY underpowered.

I have considered trading/selling the bike, instead of putting more $$ into it, but either way i'm gonna lose!

So, i'm looking for some advice...do i love the one i'm with, put some $$ into a performance package, maybe change the battery to drop some additional weight, etc. OR do i cut my losses and switch to a "real" enduro bike. Any more $$ i put into this bike i will not get back if i do sell it, so i'm at the tipping point here...keep it stock, ride it, or spend more to see if i can get some more fun out of it.

The trails i'm riding are moderately technical, lots of rocks, roots, tree stumps, mud, sand, etc. I'm a previous mountain biker, so i can handle the singletrack without too much trouble.

What i really want to know is if someone else has noticed a significant increase in power on the trails when they went with either the FMF or Yosh performance package along with the EJK?? I've changed to the 13t front sprocket and 42 rear, which helps lower the gearing to get around technical trails nicely in 2nd gear. I'm not interested in seeing performance gains in the upper speed range, which i'm worried is the only benefit i'll get from the performance package?!

    Any help greatly appreciated!

    Jason,

In my opinion the biggest bang for your performance buck with the CRF250L is the 305cc big bore kit with the required EJK. Keep in mind the only way to get the most out of this big bore kit is to also open up the air box and filter and improve the exhaust with an after market exhaust system. This mod will absolutely increase the power delivery and still maintain the reliability and durability of the CRF250L. Even with the cost of these mods and the cost of the CRF250L it will still be well below the cost of other options in the "enduro" market. As an "adventure" bike it really does a good job of getting off road and having some dirt adventure.

Thanks Ken, this is what i was looking for! investing in the exhaust, EJK is required for my end-state, so i can try that first, and if i'm happy leave it alone, otherwise move to the Big Bore kit to go even further.

    Appreciate the advice.

There is a thread on Reddit that talks about how the EJK doesn't actually work with the open loop efi of the 2017+ models - anyone know if this is the case?
