Millions of great places. Almost the whole island is connected by logging road. Campbell River, Courtenay, Nanaimo and Sooke are the best. All totally different.
Fast, tight, motocross, hill climbs, gravel pits, lakes, creeks, mud, powerlines, all in one ride. And a plus, it's the nicest place in the entire world.

Since you'd be taking the ferry over, I would ride in Nanaimo. Make your way to the Wastelands (The MotoX track). If you know the way you would be there in 15 minutes once off the ferry. You go up Dumont road to the track, continue past the track to the end of the pavement, about 1km. Unload right there. Continue up the road on the gravel on your bikes, from there just go get lost for as long as you want. The terrain out of the gate gets ridden by lots of mountain bikers so the kids (assuming their younger) will have no problems. It is neat terrain.

Just picked up my "new to me" 2004 CRF250X. Can't wait to start riding around on Vancouver Island.

If I came over from Alberta for a week or so to ride on Vancouver Island, would I need to buy permits? I have my bike registered and insured (off-road only) here in Alberta. What about bike requirements (we need visible plate, headlight and taillight)?

What kind of terrain does Nanaimo and Sooke have? I visited the Sooke potholes a few years ago and it was pretty neat up there.
