    CRF230F jetting issue

    by Tbarth13 » Fri Dec 30, 2016 6:13 pm

Please help! I have a 2017 CRF230F, and i live in Florida. I put in a 120 main, 45 slow, and the five position needle. I placed the clip in the fourth groove from the top of the needle. It cranks and idles with no problem. When you give it throttle, it boggs but doesnt die. But obviously the bog kills the power. What can i do to fix the bogg when i give it throttle?

Hi Tbarth13 welcome to CRFS Only.
Have you removed the snorkel from the top of the air box?
How does it run when normally riding?

CRF230s only have a simple carburettor with no accelerator pump so you normally roll the throttle on from idle. The fact that it bogs and doesn't cut out suggests the jetting is close.

Sometimes they need a 48 slow jet but would only go that route if it cut out.

How far out is your idle mixture screw?

Thanks for the reply. I did remove the snorkel. It bogs just the same when you get on it while riding, but it does get over the bog after a second or two. I completely forgot to adjust the air fuel mixture. I just ordered the socket for the D fitting today, and a new fuel screw.

just remember to make sure all the old o ring comes out of the carby.
Make sure you put the spring, washer and then the o ring (in that order) on to new fuel screw. The o ring has to be against the carby and the washer stops the spring destroying it.

If you end up more than 2.5 turns out you may need to go to a 48 jet.

When correct it will still bog from idle if throttle is opened rapidly but won't be noticeable when riding.

Thank you. Is there no way to fix the bog completely?

I have a 2006 crf230f and the airbox has been uncorked, the exhaust baffle has been removed. I am about to change to 120 main jet and 45 slow jet. My 2006 has a needle in it with 5 positions on it and it is in the 4th slot

My question is, just trying to learn, what happens if you use the stock needle with the 2 slots I mean after rejetting and uncorked, what will happen if I leave the stock needle in

Hi Titanpride and welcome to the site.
The standard two groove needle is just the same as the 5 groove with the bottom groove on the 2 groove equal to the middle groove on the needle with 5.

The other groove on the two groove is to allow for riders at higher elevations so it leans mixture across the rev range. From memory it equals the second groove from the top on a 5 groove needle.

Hope that helps get your head around the differences.

Back in the day if you had a needle that you needed to make richer but had no groove we would run a small washer under the circlip to raise the needle slightly. You just had to make sure it could not escape into the engine.

I have seen the circlips missing in the past so have to assume the engine can eat one occasionally. That's why you need to make sure the clip is a good fit.
