    Otter Box Tool Box (CRF 250X)

    Tool Box
    Last spring(2011) I decided I needed to carry a few tools on my bike. Since I'm so old I often put my jersey on and then realize i forgot my elbow pads, etc. I thought it best to put them on the bike rather than carry a fanny pack or such that i might forget. We have access to some tool packs at dealer cost but the models others have tried (all some sort of nylon, miracle, ballistic cloth) get dirty, fall off and generally look terrible. After a little research I looked at the "Otter Box' line of waterproof boxes for cameras, cell phones and so on. What a FIND! These are indestructible, come in a huge array of sizes and colors, can be found at lots of stores at VERY cheap prices. I bought one of smallest rectangular boxes they make. A 2000 series with dimensions of:Exterior Dimensions: 6.855" x 4.571" x 1.829";Interior Dimensions: 5.757" x 3.140" x 0.979"
    This seems very small but i can still get a lot of tools in it using 1/4 drive sockets etc. I chose this because I have LED turn signals mounted on my rear fender of my CRF250X. I needed it to fit between them so I wanted narrow. Just mount with a couple of bolts and you're done. At first I ran a safety inner tube rubber band around the edge to cover the latches but these are made way strong and the double latches are not coming undone. If you should hit one with your boot one latch is still enough to keep the box closed (I have never had one come open).
    Also check out the 3000 series for more space: Exterior Dimensions: 8.813" x 5.175" x 2.008";
    Interior Dimensions: 7.639" x 3.723" x 1.229"
    All boxes have a built in thin, but dense foam liner that I removed to gain more interior space (maybe .125 to .250 in)

    That sounds pretty cool - do you have a photo of it mounted on your bike? I am very interested to see it.

    I have the small Otter box for my 450X. It is mandated by SCORE and IRC to house the data logger that we must use,( leased from IRC), during any of the Baja races. That is one tuff little box. I will safety wire mine closed after the tracker is installed but that is only for extra insurance.
    Maybe a marketing opportunity for you Ken? IRC had trouble getting the box's to customers before the races,(I had to pick mine up with the tracker in Ensanada, hoping they would have them in time for the race.).

    Sorry for the delay, I had to dig it out of the Baja box in the garage.
    It's the small one = 4"x2.75"x1.5"
    The size isn't maked on the box and those measurements are appx based on the ruler I used and are outside dimensions.

    Yes. The ones I have seen IRC supply are the clear ones,(what I have). The data logger is the size of a pack of smokes.

    That's it. As to how many? How any SCORE racers do you deal with? ( I know of a few and they speak highly of you and CRF's). They would be the primary customers for that box.

    I was thinking, I haven't seen all that Otter Box has to offer, if they have something the size of a small brief case or such, they would make great Dual Sport panniers. All they would need is minimal framing.

    OTTERBOX PHOTOS
    The Otterbox I use is the 2000 series. The 1000 is very small. The 3000 would also work. I mean they have a HUGE selection so you can carry a tackle box size if you need to.If you don't see pictures its because this site didn't tell me how to post. I pasted a bunch of code from Photobucket but who know if it will work........OK the FAQ are not helpful in posting pictures it says I can use HTML but doesn't say how. Is this site motorcycles or HTML coding site? I tried pasting HTTP as I do on Craigslist but that doesn't seem to work. Once again FAQ says if I'm "allowed" to post how does that work? Some help here please. We are dealing with a 30 year old TEXT based Bulletin Board here? Well if you want to take the time they are on Photobucket. OK so that doesn't work. Just erased 6 HTTP links screw this pickem out of the whole album if you can find it.

    that looks like it works out pretty well. I had a pack on my rear fender but I could never keep it snug without making it a nightmare to get into. Looks like an old oil filter for an anti-rattle device 8)

    to post photos from photobucket, just grab the code that they provide that is wrapped in the [img] tags, or take the URL and put the tags on it so it looks like this...
