    Wide Ratio Transmission - '09-12 CRF450R

    by crfsonly » Fri Oct 14, 2011 4:47 pm

Good news! We have a '09-11 CRF450R wide ratio transmission prototype available for testing. This is same type of kit as the very successful wide ratio kit we've been offering for the '02-08 CRF450R for years now.

We are looking for a test bike. If you are interested please PM for the prototype testing requirements.

After testing we'll have production units available soon.

Hey Ken, when I click on the link there is nothing there. Do you still have the wide ratio for the 09-12 450R?

Ok, thanks. Will probably buy one in the fall to put into the bike over the winter.

Ken, I know that the kit only offers 2nd to 5th gear to keep the cost down. Just curious if you know whether or not the X main shaft would fit into the R or not?

This would open up even more gearing posibilities.

unfortunatley, i don't believe it will. i wish there was more demand for transmission gearing as it would help justify the R&D, manufacturing and drive down the cost. the kits we have are relatively inexpensive and still there's not a lot of demand. there's so much more that could be offered such as 1st through 5th, six speed transmissions, transmissions 250R/250X, 450R/450X. pricing out a good six speed transmission would be very expensive. many say they'd love to have one but few would actually purchase one at the price required to make it a breakeven proposition.

    Thanks for the info.

I think the reason that most people are not interested in trans gearing changes is that there is alot involved in changing it.

Most people, including myself tend to lean more towards changing sprocket sizes to find the best suited gearing for their needs. Probably because its fast, easy to do and cheap. The problem that I have found is that this more of a bandaid fix.

Running 13/54 gearing on my R allows me to rip through tight single track and tackle very technical sections but once the trail opens up, I am ripping through the gears and before i know it im in 5th and topped out and wanting alot more!

So I changed to 13/52 and was still not impressed. The really technical stuff was a little harder to navigate due to the increased crawling speed but top end speed was still not as fast as i would like. So I went back to 13/54.

Now this is where a lot of people would say to sell the "R" get an "X". There are 2 problems with that statement. 1, I dont want an X for numerous reasons, and if I did, I would have bought one. 2, for most people that are worried about money, this is a massive waste. I would never get all my money back that is into my R and then would still have to purchase an X.

So my next logical step is to keep the 13/54 gearing and change the tranny gearing to get the outcome that I am looking for.

Your kits are relatively inexpensive and it makes me wonder why there is not much of a demand. It cant be the price since most people spend way more than that on pipes, pistons and cams!

Using the gearing calculator I am convinced that your kit is what I need to get my bike to perform the way that i want. I hope to get one at the end of the season and install it over the winter.

    Sorry for rambling lol

you are absolutely correct. if it was a 30 minute bolt on upgrade there would definitely be more interest. the fact that Honda bottom ends are bulletproof very few ever fail so it's not even a large draw for replacement transmissions. so, total cost (parts and installation) is an issue for this upgrade.

you are right about final drive options, very limited with the close-ration R transmissions. a wide-ratio trans is correct solution to the problem.

i'm hopeful we'll have something in a month or so.

Unfortunately, one no longer exists. At one point the answer was yes, but unfortunately there was an issue with one of the gears in the kit that could not be overcome. I wish I had better news.
